Dover, New Phila boys knocked out of golf districts

ZANESVILLE, Ohio - A day after both Dover and New Philadelphia's girls' golf teams fell short of qualifying for the state tournament, their boys' squads suffered the same fate.

The Tornadoes and Quakers finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in Tuesday's Division I District Tournament at EagleSticks Golf Club, with Dover (334) besting New Phila (345) by eleven strokes. Dover junior Carter Begue led the way with a 77 (+7), followed by freshman Jacob Hanner (83, +13) and senior Reese Klar (84, +14). Both senior Logan Downing and sophomore Dylan Grewell shot 90 +20) for the Tornadoes' final qualifying score.

As for the Quakers, juniors Jacob Hootman (79, +9) and Shad Kenily (83, +13) posted the squad's two best scores, while froshes Nathan Menapace (91, +21) and Louis Devore (92, +22) rounded out New Phila's total (Junior Austin Erickson also shot a 93 (+23) for the Quakers).

Tri-Valley (316) was the only team to advance to next week's Division I State Tournament, to be played at the Scarlet Course at The Ohio State University Golf Club. Senior Johnson posted a tournament-best 69 (-1), but Warren senior Seth Dennis (73, +3) advanced to Columbus as the individual qualifier since Johnson will participate with the Scotties.
