American Legion baseball to return to area this summer

By Mitch Spinell

NEW PHILADELPHIA, Ohio - American Legion baseball is returning to the area this summer.

The New Philadelphia 18-and-under team will take the field this season as an American Legion team, as New Philadelphia American Legion Post 139 has agreed to sponsor the team.

The Black Sox, who also make up teams in the age groups of 9U, 13U, 14U, 16U, are primarily made up of New Philadelphia-area players.

The Black Sox will be active this season, unlike the Tuscarawas County American Legion Baseball program that disbanded before the 2019 season after founder and coach Jim Baxter retired.

The American Legion canceled all its regional tournaments across the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the American Legion World Series, which is usually played in Shelby, N.C., every August.
