Former Quakers football coach Matt Dennison heading to Canton South

By Mitch Spinell

NEW PHILADELPHIA, Ohio - Former New Philadelphia football coach Matt Dennison is returning to the sideline - for Canton South.

WTUZ and Big Time Sports Ohio reported Friday afternoon that Dennison - who stepped down as the Quakers' coach last November - would be taking the position of head coach for the Wildcats.

More details and an official announcement are slated for Monday, per reports.

Dennison resigned after the 2020 season while still the athletic director at New Philadelphia High School, but he will now hold a teaching position while heading the South football program.

Dennison was the all-time winningest coach in New Philadelphia history, compiling a record of 142-53 in 18 seasons. He now takes his third head coaching position at the high school level, after his stops at New Phila and Claymont (2001-02).

The Quakers - who hired Mike Johnson as their new football coach this past December - went 7-2 in 2020 and beat rival Dover 21-13, before losing in the state playoffs to Chardon.
