East Canton boys take third state cross country title

OBETZ, Ohio - For the third time in school history, the East Canton Hornets took the Division III state cross country championship with a winning performance on Saturday at Fortress Obetz.

The Hornets won by five points over Summit Country Day.

Junior Gabe Shilling was the top individual runner for the Hornets with a time of 16:08.8, 10th among all runners. Brylan Holland, Alex Yarian, Andrew Wade, and Braxton Ohman followed in the scoring five for East Canton.

The Hornets' average time was 16:42, besting Summit Country Day's 16:45 and third-place Mount Gilead's 16:53.

After finishing in third place the previous two seasons, the Hornets finished the job in bringing home their third state title, following championships in 1998 and 2017. Many of the Hornets runners that also participate on the track and field squad also got to make up for the lost spring season due to the coronavirus.
