FAIRFIELD TOWNSHIP (WJER) - Firefighters say they may never learn how a fire started that destroyed a rental home Monday morning.

Fairfield Township Fire Chief Don Frey says it happened around 10 am at a two-story, wood-frame house in the 6900-block of Mount Pleasant Road, between Boy Scout Road and state Route 212.

“It was fully engulfed when we got there. There ain’t no when you can tell what happened and what caused it,” he says.

Frey says nobody was home when the fire started, and he believes a passerby reported it to 911. The house, valued at approximately $52,000, and its contents are considered a total loss.

Meanwhile, two Mineral City businesses are collecting donations for the displaced family. A list of needed items is on the Mineral City Volunteer Fire Department's Facebook page. Donations can be dropped off at the TV Tavern at 8930 S. High St. or the Drunken Uncle at 4995 Railroad St.
