DOVER (Tusco TV) - City police detectives say they’re planning to seek felony charges in a child abuse case that’s sparked outrage and criticism across social media.

Captain Chad Mowrer says they’ve been investigating since Sunday morning when the suspected abuse to the infant was initially reported. Mowrer says he wants people to know that they’re working diligently to bring the perpetrator to justice, but it’s not the type of thing that happens right away.

“This is not getting swept under the rug. We have a process that we have to go through to be sure that a good case is established. That’s why we’ve been working so hard on this, and it doesn’t happen in 60 minutes like it does on television,” he says.

Police call logs indicate the 1-year-old was brought to Union Hospital for injuries reportedly inflicted by his mother’s boyfriend. Mowrer says the infant had to be transferred to another hospital but has since been released to a safe environment.

“The child was transported to Akron Children’s Hospital but has since been released and a safety plan was put in place to where he and his brother are both in a safe location,” he says.

Mowrer says the goal was to have the report on the prosecutor’s desk by the end of the day so charges could be sought through the grand jury.
