DOVER (Tusco TV) - The Tuscarawas County YMCA is again giving community members a chance to burn some calories ahead of their holiday feasts.
The Turkey Trot is back at the Y Thanksgiving morning with same-day registration available from 7 to 8:30 for the 9 am race. Marketing Director Kathleen Johnson says the festive 5k has become a holiday tradition that brings the community together while challenging area athletes.
"It’s a run or walk. People can bring their dogs or their strollers so it’s a family event but it is part of the Ohio Challenge Series as well so there’s some serious runners and then there’s some people that are just out there getting ready to just start off the holiday in a really good way," she says.
People can pre-register for Thursday’s Turkey Trot online at tuscymca.org or during the fitness expo and packet picket event happening at the Y tonight from 5 to 7:30. Johnson says there will be photo opportunities, chances to pick up fun, turkey-themed gear, and meet-and-greets with the race’s namesake.
"There were two live turkeys pardoned for the race this year by Angel Family Farms, so they’ll be here with those live turkeys during packet pickup and if all goes well, they will return the next day for the event as well," she says.
Turkey Trot sponsors include Wendy’s, Dover Brake, Adventure Harley-Davidson, Denny Plastics, The Lounge at 77, Trinity Hospital Twin City and Youthful Aesthetics LLC. Johnson says the event is their largest fundraiser of the year to support recreational opportunities for those unable to afford Y memberships.
