NEW PHILADELPHIA - Tuscarawas County Coroner's Office is revealing the name of a kayaker recovered deceased Tuesday from the Tuscarawas River although the cause of her death is still unknown.

Information released Wednesday afternoon by Coroner Jeff Cameron identifies 55-year-old Julie Schonauer of New Philadelphia as the boater found unresponsive during a rescue operation near the New Philadelphia Buehler’s. Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Adam Fisher says the operation was launched after a 911 caller reported hearing someone in the area screaming for help.

The individual was not able to be seen from any of the nearby neighbors however could be heard asking for that help and a 911 call was made as a result.

Fisher says the rescuers located and attempted to revive the woman but their efforts were unsuccessful. He says the matter has been turned over to the coroner’s office for further investigation.

“She was transported from the area to the Stark County Coroner’s Office for an autopsy to be completed and determine the exact cause of her death.”

Fisher says it does not appear that foul play was involved or that the death was water-related.
