Uhrichsville, Ohio - A Newcomerstown high school teacher is facing criminal charges for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with one of his students.

Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s detectives said in a news release that 33-year-old Adam Lefler was taken in custody Tuesday after Uhrichsville Police found him parked outside Claymont Center with a 16-year-old student. Lefler is being held at the Tuscarawas County Jail on one count of sexual battery and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Newcomerstown Superintendent Jeff Staggs issued a statement calling the allegations against the man who also serves as their high school drama director “shocking and disturbing.”  

Staggs said Lefler has been placed on unpaid administrative and is to stay off school property and have no contact with staff and students while the case is pending. He added that the district is committed to working with law enforcement and any student or family with concerns. 

Staggs noted that Lefler has had no discipline problems while employed with the district, nor are they aware of any past allegations of inappropriate conduct. Staggs said the district remains committed to providing a safe environment for students.
