TUSCARAWAS (Tusco TV) - Tusky’s mayor says they’re working to correct an accounting issue that caused the state to declare their books “unauditable.”

Dana Moore says they recently received a letter from the state auditor’s office saying their financial records could not be audited due to unreconciled differences between the village’s books and its banking statements. Moore says it has to do with how payments are recorded when people’s tax or utility checks bounce.

"An example would be someone who writes a check with insufficient funds. Do we enter it in the month of the bill being due or in the following month when we receive the statement from the bank so it meets reconciliation with the bank? And that’s the whole issue at this point," he explains.

State auditors found monthly differences ranging from $33 to just under $5,000 throughout 2018 and similar issues going back to March of 2017. Moore says there’s no indication that any funds were misappropriated.

"The reconciliation with the bank on a monthly basis does not meet their criteria. However, at the end of the year, it does balance out because she reports it in the following month," he says.

The state gave Tusky 90 days to correct the accounting errors. Moore says their fiscal officer already has most of them resolved, so he’s confident they’ll be able to meet that deadline.
