Tuscarawas County, Ohio – Tuscarawas County's own Sheriff Orvis Campbell is being recognized for his outstanding work.

Sheriff Campbell is being honored by the Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association with their 2018 Outstanding Peace Officer award.

Tuscarawas County Prosecutor Ryan Styer said he nominated Campbell for the award for his outstanding work throughout his entire career but particularly for his role in a 2016 abduction, assault and attempted murder case in Mineral City.

Styer said the sheriff's instinct and hard work made a critical difference in the case.

"His quick action in following the 11-year-old victim to Akron Children's Hospital with the hope of getting a description of the perpetrator led almost immediately to his capture as dusk was setting in," Styer said in a written statement. "It is very possible that, without his quick instincts, the perpetrator would still be running from justice.

"Instead, Sheriff Campbell helped this brave, young man, known in the community as the Mineral City Warrior, capture the perpetrator, and he helped the boy through the rigors of preparing to testify," Styer continued.  "The jury returned a verdict of guilty on all counts, the perpetrator is serving life without parole, and the appeals were exhausted earlier this year."

Styer said the award is well-deserved: "I think our community knows that.  Now, Ohio knows."

Campbell was presented with the award during the group's annual conference last week in Columbus.
