NEW PHILADELPHIA (Tusco TV) - Police are reminding the public about the importance of situational safety after an armed robbery at a Latin convenience store.

New Philadelphia Police Detective Shawn Nelson says the robbery occurred around 8:30 pm at the Tienda La Esperanza on Bowers Avenue. Nelson says the clerk was counting up the nightly deposit when an unknown male in dark clothing and a mask walked in holding a gun.

"The clerk became in fear for his safety, at which time he ran out the door and left the robber in the business by himself. Upon units’ arrival, the building was clear. The subject had fled the scene and had taken the money from the business along with the owner or the operator’s cell phone," he says.

Nelson says multiple agencies scoured the area on foot but were unable to locate the suspect. He says they’re now attempting to track down security footage and the victim’s cell phone, and they also want people to call the station if they have any information.

"We are asking for any information that someone would have regarding the suspect in this case to please step forward with any information. It’d be very useful," he says.

Nelson encourages people to be aware of their surroundings, especially if they’re handling money.
