NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) - A New Philadelphia sophomore with an extensive background in showing cattle is going to teach her craft to an Ohio celebrity as part of a charity event in the state capital.

McKaylynne Helmke will participate in the Dean’s Charity Steer Show at the Ohio State Fair, teaming with Bob McElligot, the radio voice of the Columbus Blue Jackets. McKaylynne, who has been showing cattle since she was 4 years old, says she has to teach the radio personality the tricks of the trade.

“I’m going to go about it how I would teach like I would teach a younger kid because at the fair and stuff I like to help the younger kids learn how to show so I’m going to go about it like that but hopefully I don’t go too far over his head,” she says.

McKaylynne is a member of the Crooked Run 4-H Club. She’s been showing and selling steer at the Tuscarawas County Fair since she was 9. She has also shown cattle at the Ohio State Fair, and her connections there led to her involvement in this charity event.

“I was asked by the head of the Beef Department at the Ohio State Fair, Mr. Bill Tom,” she says. “He asked me back in March if I wanted to be a part of it, and he told me that I could like teach a celebrity how to show a steer and everything was going to Ronald McDonald House. I couldn’t say no.”

McKaylynne and her celebrity will show her steer, named Sasquatch, as they would in a typical livestock sale. However, the money will go to the Ronald McDonald House. The event is on July 30th at 2 pm at the Ohio State Fair.
