NEW PHILADELPHIA - Kent State University at Tuscarawas officials are inviting the community to come out and learn more about its Makerspace equipment during a special event on Monday, July 29th.

The campus will be holding Makerspace Community Day from 9 am to 4 pm in the Academic Learning Commons in Founders Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Makerspace Community Day will feature workshops and activities, including Makerspace tours, sign painting, soldering and button making workshops, and card making with the Cricut. The event will also include free popcorn and activities for children.

“Our Makerspace is an area that provides students and the community with many types of high-tech equipment they can use to create and expand their imagination,” says Maria Feik, Kent State Tuscarawas equipment lab technician and event coordinator.

Kent State Tuscarawas increased digital and entrepreneurial literacy in Tuscarawas and surrounding counties by providing a Makerspace where state-of-the-art equipment and support services meet. Makerspace is used to develop ideas and entrepreneurial skills with professional business support.

“Our campus is in a unique position to offer students and the community support for the innovative ideas created in the Makerspace,” says Cherie Bronkar, Kent State Tuscarawas library director. “Our programs provide education, while the Makerspace provides inspiration and the means to test and apply education in ways that create new business ventures and marketable products.”

Along with offering various workshops, Makerspace offers support to develop small business ideas. Support extends to services offered through Blackstone Launchpad, the Office of Business and Community Support and the Ohio Small Business Development Center.

Use of Makerspace equipment is free to residents of Tuscarawas County. People are welcome to bring their own materials, or they can purchase them through the Academic Learning Commons.
