PORT WASHINGTON (WJER) - An Indian Valley educator has received statewide recognition for her contributions to special education.

Megan Heath, an intervention specialist at Port Washington Elementary, recently won the Franklin B. Walter Outstanding Educator Award, presented to 16 educators in Ohio for their work with students with disabilities. Indian Valley Superintendent Ira Wentworth says Heath was selected from a competitive field.

“I can’t say it’s a surprise knowing Megan’s work but you know it’s a competitive selection process to be chosen as the representative for SST12. There’s a lot of good and great outstanding teachers across our region. To see Megan come to the top of that, that was quite rewarding,” he says.

He says Heath deserves the recognition for her ability to specialize instruction for each student.

“The basis for her success comes upon her relationships with her students. She builds, first and foremost, great relationships with each of the students she works with.  Then, she tailors the instruction of those students to be personalized for each and every one of them,” he says.

Wentworth says heath is the fifth Indian Valley instructor to receive statewide recognition in recent years. He says the success comes from educators working together.
