NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) - The Tuscarawas County Veterans Service Office is reminding veterans about its offer to feed them for the holidays.

Veterans Service Officer Jim Thornton says they will be giving out coupons for veterans to use on a free turkey or ham at Buehler's for the holidays, good through the end of the year. Thornton says the local office is able to pay for this due to some extra money in their emergency relief fund, which they wanted to see go back to area veterans.

“Some of those funds we’re using to give to veterans, and at the same time, we’re asking them to come in our office so any new veterans we may be able to link up and link with whatever benefits that they have available to them,” he says.

Veterans Service Officer Holly Lane says this is the first time for the promotion here.

“We are trying to reach out to veterans, and somebody suggested that another county veterans service office was doing a similar program, so we thought it’s a way to give back to the veterans in our county,” she says.

The deadline for veterans of Tuscarawas County to apply for the free holiday meat coupons is Tuesday at the end of the office day, at 4 pm, at the service office at 393 16th St. SW in New Philadelphia.
