Chef Walter Staib spent time with volunteers in Zoar cooking up German recipes for an upcoming episode of his PBS series "A Taste of History." (Historic Zoar Village)

ZOAR (WJER) - Zoar community officials say the historic town will be making an appearance on national television next year.

Community Association President Jon Elsasser says Chef Walter Staib filmed an episode of “A Taste of History” in Zoar recently, cooking traditional German meals on-screen inside the Number One House. Elsasser says they had the chance to taste the chef’s traditional beef stew, apple pancake and other cuisines.

“We also had a Zoar descendant, Nancy Wyatt, who actually showed the chef how to make Zoar pretzels so they got to eat some of those, I got to try some of those and they all got to try a little bit of the food — and it was excellent,” he says.

Elsasser says the show is set to air sometime in 2020. He says in addition to the food, film crews also toured the town, showcasing different parts of the former German settlement.

“Showed people in the garden, drove around and took pictures of the various buildings, interviewed people, the mayor, Scott Gordon, me, others, just about Zoar. I think it’ll be out sometime next year, and as you know how technology is going, a lot of people will probably watch it in streaming,” he says.

Elsasser says he hopes the show will spur some additional tourism for the community and surrounding areas after it airs.
