DOVER (WJER) - Nominations are being sought for the first class of the new Tuscarawas County Sports Hall of Fame.

Organizers say after two years of planning, the registered non-profit organization is ready to start honoring legendary athletes from the county’s past. Hall of Fame President Tom Farbizo says it’s long overdue.

“Stark County has numerous hall of fames. Holmes County has a county hall of fame. Wayne County has a county hall of fame. Harrison County has a county hall of fame, and here we sat in Tuscarawas County with a rich athletic sports history and no hall of fame,” he says.

The Dover Public Library will serve as the headquarters. However, Library Director and Hall of Fame Secretary Jim Gill says there won’t be plaques adorning the walls.

“Eventually, as it unfolds, the ultimate goal is to have a touch-screen type of display board where you can search, oh, Class of 2022, who was in that, click on their name, see their photo and what they accomplished,” he says.

Gill says they are looking for financial support from high school athletic booster clubs and corporate sponsorships. Anyone interested in helping or nominating an athlete for the first Hall of Fame Class of 2020 can find forms on the Dover Library’s website.
