UHRICHSVILLE (WJER) - Uhrichsville’s new council president says he was seeking the promotion to be able to move the city forward.

After two years as an at-large council member, Buck Cottrell sat over his first meeting as council president Thursday. Democrats selected him to fill the vacancy earlier in the week. Cottrell says his goals include continuing with road improvements, working to fix or tear down eyesore homes, and more.

“I wanted to still do something for the kids of the community. We need to do something, and I think being as more of the leader I can lead it some, so that’s what the main reason is, and just for the city of Uhrichsville, to make it better.”

Cottrell says the one downside is that he will no longer get to vote on resolutions and ordinances unless it’s to break a tie.

“That was a decision that was not taken lightly but I decided that I think I can be a leader. I’m a leader at other places in the community, and I think I can handle the job, and I’m really, really gonna put all my effort into it.”

The Democratic Central Committee will now be meeting January 20th at 6 pm at council chambers to select someone to serve the two years remaining on Cottrell’s at-large council term.
