NEW PHILADELPHIA (Tusco TV) - Tuscarawas County’s commissioners are using a recent bus ride to highlight the county’s public transportation options.

Commissioner Chris Abbuhl says they rode the Horizons bus last Wednesday from the courthouse annex to the Tuscarawas County Senior Center and back to showcase the county’s TuscTransit program.

"The plan was for us to be able to ride on the bus to be able to bring about awareness on the transportation that we have here in Tuscarawas County. There’s three major organizations that contribute to transportation for the residents, and that’s Society for Equal Access, the senior center and Horizons," he says.

Abbuhl says the county receives state and federal funding to make the service available for a nominal fee to anyone in the community.

"Some people think it’s just restricted to certain individuals and it’s not. It’s actually for everybody, so there’s an opportunity if somebody’s not able to get to their destination, whether it’s a doctor’s appointment or shopping or to visit a relative, you can still do that," he says.

The fee is $6 round trip or $4 one way for destinations in Tuscarawas County, or $1.70 per mile for out-of-county travel. Abbuhl says people can request a ride by contacting TuscTransit Coordinator Shannon Hursey at the Tuscarawas County Senior Center.
