DOVER (WJER) - Firefighters were called out to lend their vast services to two people inconvenienced by Monday morning’s power outage.

Captain Mike Mosser says they had to go free two people from a stuck elevator in a medical building at 340 Oxford St. at separate times. The first involved a woman when the power went out around 8 am. Then, a man got stuck in that same elevator after the power came back on, in the 9 o’clock hour. Mosser says he’s unsure what caused the second incident, but they were ready to handle it.

“We train for it. We have a special set of keys to gain access to the cars and some fairly basic training on the mechanics of the elevator and how to operate them without power,” he says.

Mosser says the battery-operated security lights kicked in, and the two people were only trapped in the elevator about 10 minutes each.

“Today, they were calm. Everything was ok. In the past, you get a mix sometimes. Sometimes, it upsets people because they get a little bit claustrophobic but today everybody was calm,” he says.

Mosser says every elevator is required by law to have a telephone, and the ones in town are either programmed to call Dover Police or the sheriff’s office.
