NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) - New Philadelphia’s mayor says a new cell tower behind the city’s fire department will be getting technology to boost service for T-Mobile customers in the area.
Joel Day says council agreed to Delaware LLC to lease space on the tower that will enhance service for customers using that network. He says that contract will bring in $800 a month for the city.
“Any additional usage of that tower by cellular companies or other companies that’ll put an antenna there, we get $100 a month in addition for each antenna. It’ll be some money that’ll be available that we can start investing more in some downtown revitalization projects,” he says.
Day says he also hopes to eventually use the tower to give people downtown additional ways to stay connected.
“T-Mobile customers will definitely benefit from this, and also this tower because of its location, down the road I also see we may be able to use it to put a wireless cloud over the downtown area so that residents and visitors who come downtown will have wi-fi access,” he says.
Day says that capability is something other towns around Ohio are beginning to provide and would increase New Phila’s ability to attract visitors and businesses.
