Lucy has helped Cody McDonald improve his reading and overcome his fear of dogs. (Submitted)

New Philadelphia, Ohio - Certified therapy dog Lucy and handler Becky Knecht will be visiting the Tuscarawas County Public Library System's Main Library twice a month to read with area children.

Lucy's visits are part of the library system's Paws to Read Program. The program was created to help kids who may be reluctant readers or who have difficulty reading by providing a reading buddy who is eager to listen without judgment.

New Philadelphia resident Becky DePuy says her oldest son, Cody, had a fear of dogs since being jumped on by a large puppy. She heard about the program and thought interacting with a therapy dog at the library might help him get over his fear.

DePuy says Cody has been visiting with Lucy since November and now gets very excited to come to the library to see her.

Children's Services Manager Linda Uhler says it's not every day that the library can help someone in getting over their fears, while also encouraging them to explore books.

Lucy will return to the County Library on April 17th from 4:30 to 5:30 pm. For more information, call 330-364-4474 ext. 102 or visit www.tusclibrary.org.
