STRASBURG (WJER) - Strasburg firefighters say a blaze ended up causing about $70,000 in damage to an apartment including the structure and contents.

Chief Andy Slemmer says a passerby reported the fire in the 1,000 block of Susanna Avenue around 9:10 pm Friday.

“We arrived on scene. There was heavy smoke coming out. There was also flames coming out of the front room, which ended up being the kitchen area, and as we were deploying the hose line, the flames actually grew bigger but we were able to get a good knockdown on it so the fire did not spread anywhere else,” he says.

Slemmer says there were no injuries.

“We did have a report that somebody was inside but that turned out to be false. It ended up being their dog, and all the animals did get out of the house,” he says.

Slemmer says the fire did start in that front kitchen area of the building, but they are unsure of the cause. The state fire marshal is assisting in the investigation.
