New Philadelphia, OH - Two local charities are teaming up to present a weekly after-school program for area youth.

The Learning Zone is a new program for students in grades K-5 being offered by the Salvation Army of Dover-New Philadelphia in partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Central Ohio.

During the program, participating students will have an opportunity to receive homework tutoring, participate in social and emotional enrichment activities, enjoy a healthy snack, and participate in recreational activities.

Each child in the program will also be paired with a mentor from Big Brothers Big Sisters, and one of the organization’s site coordinators will be present at all times.

"This program provides us with the unique ability to provide a safe place for children to learn and play, but more importantly to grow socially, emotionally, and academically," says Lt. Andrew Allen, commanding officer for The Salvation Army of Dover-New Philadelphia.

The program begins October 2 and will be offered every Tuesday from 4 to 5 p.m.

BBBS is currently looking for volunteers to serve as mentors in the program. Volunteers can high school students or adults that are available during program times.

Volunteers or parents interested in enrolling their children in the program can inquire by calling 330-339-6916 or emailing site coordinator Lauren Countryman at lcountryman@bigs4kids.com. Parents can also enroll their children by calling 330-364-3811 ext. 302 or stopping by the Salvation Army’s local headquarters at The Salvation Army located at 809 Emmet Ave. NW in New Philadelphia.
