New Philadelphia, Ohio (WJER) - Tuscarawas Central Catholic eighth-graders are honoring the memory of a classmate by supporting a cause in her name.

The students presented a check for more than $700 during a pep rally Friday for the Tommie Meyers-Palmer Memorial Scholarship Fund. Tommie was 10-years old when she died from injuries sustained during a four-wheeler accident in 2016. Eighth-grader Piper Olson spoke on behalf of Tommie, calling her a special person.

“She was so charismatic. She was very unique, so much fun to be around. Whoever she hung out with, they instantly became her friend. Everyone was her friend,” she says.

Principal Matt Rizert says this fund will provide tuition assistance to students in need attending TCC Elementary.

“I think it’s just unbelievable that her classmates three years after Tommie passed away still show so much love for her and want to work to continue to support her and her family and to keep her memory alive,” he says.

The students were able to raise the funds by donating to participate in out-of-uniform days.  The first Tommie Myers-Palmer scholarship was awarded last year.
