NEW PHILADELPHIA - The Ohio State Highway Patrol is teaming up with the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Office to target impaired drivers.

The agencies will have a checkpoint set up Friday from 7 to 10 pm on North High Street (SR 800) and Grant Street in Tuscarawas County.

OVI checkpoints are funded by federal grant dollars to help keep the roadways safe by deterring and intercepting impaired drivers. Last year, troopers made 26,611 OVI arrests statewide based on provisional data.

Impaired driving was responsible for 367 OVI-related fatal crashes in Ohio in 2018 in which 402 people were killed.

Those planning to consume alcohol are urged to keep themselves and others safe by designating a sober driver or making other travel arrangements before they start drinking.
