New Philadelphia, Ohio (WTUZ) - The New Philadelphia Fire Department was able to contain a structure fire quickly on Wednesday evening.

The department was called to 213 Clubside Lane NW Wednesday around 5:30pm. Lt. Bobby Smith says they are familiar with the multi-unit building.

“It’s kind of a scary building because there are so many units that are in this building, and so many apartments, and it’s all made out of wood, so we were real worried about that. We actually called out for a lot of extra help, right off the bat.”

Uhrichsville, Sugarcreek and Bolivar were on scene to assist, evacuating residents, while New Philadelphia was able to extinguish the blaze.

Lt. Smith notes the fire appears to have started on the exterior of the 10-unit structure.

“Most of the damage is on the outside wall, whether something was hot in the mulch, and went up, we’re not really sure yet. So, we’ll have to go and look at that but there’s very little damage on the inside. Most of the damage is us having to force doors to get in to the apartments.”

The apartment where the fire began was vacant, and there were no injuries due to the fire. Smith adds that, besides the smoke smell in some of the apartments, no personal contents in the units were damaged.
