SUGARCREEK (Tusco TV) - The Lady Pirates are getting a new head basketball coach, and he’s ready to reinvigorate the team for another successful season.

The Garaway Board of Education recently tapped Tracy Miller of Akron to replace former head girls basketball coach Dave Shutt who’s taking a break after two decades of coaching. Garaway 7-12 Principal Ryan Taggert says Miller brings a tremendous amount of experience to the position after spending the last 18 years coaching in Summit County. Taggert says he and Athletic Director Chip Amicone are both happy to welcome him aboard.

"We feel that Tracy is going to do a phenomenal job at highlighting personal growth through the vehicle of girls basketball for us, so we are very excited to have Tracy on our coaching staff here," he says.

Miller says his coaching philosophy emphasizes personal growth, community involvement, and of course, lots of hard work.

"I want my girls' basketball program to be active in the community in the lower levels of the junior high and middle school. I want those girls to look up to the older girls as role models, just starting from the ground on up, there in fourth grade building up to the seniors," he says.

Miller says he’s looking forward to coaching at the rural school and relocating to the Bolivar area.

"As I’m coming down 77 you come over this one little hill and all you can see is trees. To me, this is like God’s country down here. It’s beautiful, so I really, really like this area," he says.

Miller began his coaching career at Archbishop Hoban and has served as the head girls varsity basketball coach at Green High School for the last nine years.
