Uhrichsville, Ohio - Firefighters say no one was injured in an early-morning blaze that destroyed two garages on the city’s east side.

Uhrichsvile Fire Captain Wes Dillon says they were called out just after 1 am Monday for a reported structure fire in the 500 block of East Fifth Street. He says they arrived on scene and found two garages engulfed in flames and a third one starting to catch on fire.

“Upon arrival, [we] found two detached garages both fully involved with another garage to the south that was starting on fire. We pulled a two-and-a-half inch hand line off of our first-in engine and began the attack with that,” he says.

Dillon says firefighters from Dennison and New Philadelphia assisted at the scene and helped them get the fire under control in about 30 minutes. He says the first two garages and their contents were a total loss with only minimal damage to the exterior of the third.

“It just had some melt, very little damage to that,” he says. “We were able to protect it right away, get the fire off of that.”

Dillon says none of the homes nearby were damaged, despite wind gusts blowing the embers more than a block away.

“I’d say we were pretty lucky due to the conditions. It was a rapid response. If we wouldn’t have got there quick and got water on it, it very well could have had another garage and a house involved,” he says.

Dillon says they’re listing the cause of the fire as undetermined because they can’t rule out the possibility of an electrical malfunction. The total damage is estimated to be around $50,000.
