NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) - The Tuscarawas Valley Film Festival wraps up its 2019 run that’s been featuring different independent movies at Quaker Cinema in New Philadelphia Thursday night.

Board Member Ty Simmelink says the first film at 6:30 is a documentary called “Change of the Game,” about transgender high school athletes.

“I think it’s gonna have a fair look at, yeah, how does that affect historical records if you’ve got people competing on the opposite side of their gender lines and how they are versus how they feel and what it affects, so I think it’s gonna be an interesting take,” he says.

Simmelink says that will be followed around 8:30 by a showing of the film “Farewell,” which has been getting Oscar buzz.

“It’s about a Chinese family. They find out their grandmother, the matriarch of the family, basically, has a terminal illness and they’re basically trying to smash together a wedding real quick as one more big family gathering and all the drama that goes on that,” he says.

The doors at Quaker Cinema open at 5:30 with local pizza, beer, wine and sweets available to purchase with proceeds again going to Big Brothers Big Sisters. The ticket price is $10 a person to see both films but Simmelink says people can enjoy the food without having to see the movies.
