UHRICHSVILLE (WJER) - Tools to safely dispose of unwanted drugs and fight opiate-related overdoses will be available to the public at Mako’s next week.

The Tuscarawas County Opiate Task Force’s 922 Initiative will give away free Dettera bags and Narcan nasal spray, the opiate-overdose antidote, on Wednesday, July 3rd, from 1 to 3 pm. Alcohol And Addiction Program Director Andrea Dominick says the Deterra bags should be used to throw away unwanted prescription drugs.

“The Deterra bags are great because if you have medication just lying around you don’t use anymore and you think it would be harmless, don’t think that way. Get a Deterra bag, put it in there and dispose of it,” she says.

She says the July 3rd event is part of a greater initiative to eliminate drug use and overdoses in the county.

“We have a beautiful community. Let’s restore it back to that beauty but let’s do it properly by having the proper education, the proper tools to respond to an overdose, like Narcan, and just be armed with those things that are gonna build us back up to that greatness again,” she says.

Dominick says the 922 Initiative was created by people with a personal interest in keeping drugs out of the Twin Cities area. She says their message is “No way. Not in my town.”
