DOVER (WJER) - A Dover High School senior will raise the American flag at the new Canal Dover Park as part of his Eagle Scout project.

Andrew Mosser is installing a flag pole and other amenities to improve the park as he works toward the highest rank in scouting. The city will provide about $2,500 to pay for the poll, but Fire Chief Russ Volkert says Mosser and his friends are doing all the work.

“The work that was done saves the city a great deal of money and time and benefits everybody the uses the park, and I think it was very admirable for a young man to recognize the need and take the steps to do that,” he says.

Mosser says asking the city for money was a unique experience.

“That was really neat because I was scrambling to figure out how I’m going to fund this. Then I got a call from the chief one day and he said there’s a grant we could ask for and it could possibly pay for everything,” he says. “That was very exciting when I found that out.”

Mosser has already assembled and installed three benches and two picnic tables at the park as he leads a group of scouts and coordinates with a private contractor.

“The point of these projects is for me to lead so I’m coordinating with my troop, Troop 87 from Dover, and fellow scout friends of mine and they’re gonna help me put it all up and in,” he says.

The flagpole will be near the park entrance off East Front Street. Mosser says it will be a few weeks before it is delivered and installed.
