DOVER (Tusco TV) - Dover school officials are canceling their ballot request for additional operating dollars after hearing some positive financial news from the county auditor.

The Dover Board of Education voted Monday to pull their 6.9-mill levy request from the November 5th ballot. Treasurer Andrew Bache says the vote comes in response to the recent triennial tax update that’s expected to increase Dover’s yearly property tax revenue by around $800,000. He says increase only covers about a third of the district’s long-term revenue needs, but they don’t want to ask voters for more than what’s needed.

"Knowing that, we just feel like we need to take a step back and re-assess the situation and see where the district’s at and where we need to be going forward," he says.

Superintendent Carla Birney says future levy attempts are still a possibility but she says this gives taxpayers a break and the district some time to reassesses its financial situation.

"This amount is still just an estimate. It will be finalized in December and then there’s an appeals process for taxpayers that runs January through March, so we just feel at this time we need to step back, take the time that we need to see what the actual amounts are and the longterm impact that will have on our budget moving forward," she says.

Birney says they’ve also asked the elections board not to count the vote if it’s too late to get the levy removed from the ballot.
