DOVER (WJER) - The City of Dover will say goodbye to the summer with an appropriately festive farewell party this weekend.

The city’s annual End of Summer Celebration will be Sunday at Dover City Park. Dover Parks and Recreation Director Scott Jerles says the festival’s popularity has grown since its introduction a decade ago.

“It’s pretty much the same as it has been in past years. It’s just become a popular event for everybody, and if it ain’t broke, you don’t fix it,” he says.

The event starts with vintage baseball around 1 pm and concludes with fireworks at dusk. In between they have live performances by Max Beal at 1, the Moonlyterz at 4, and Foreigner tribute band Head Games at 7. Meanwhile, the car show is at 5, and kids train rides are from 4 to 7, along with free inflatables and food vendors. Jerles says he’s enjoyed the event since they introduced it in 2009.

“It is a lot of work. It’s a lot of effort that goes into this but it’s all worth it when you see the kids and the families enjoy themselves,” he says.

The city will also offer free swimming at Dover Pool during the End of Summer Celebration Sunday.
