DENNISON - The Dennison Depot Railroad Museum is making sure people with sensory needs have an enjoyable experience aboard this year's Polar Express.

Depot officials recently announced the addition of a sensory-friendly ride to the beloved holiday train excursion. Special Projects Coordinator Kate Smith says their goal is to make sure everyone enjoys the memorable adventure to the North Pole and back.

“We are so excited to add this option for families that need a different Polar Express experience. This is a magical event that’s created so many Christmas memories, but sensory-friendly families are often not able to participate. This year, by adding this new car - that changes. We hope we can make this Christmas extra special,” she says.

The sensory-friendly ride will be offered at 2 pm on December 15th and includes designated waiting and boarding areas along with a quieter, calmer ride and other changes to keep sensory stimulation low. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and families are encouraged to bring any tools, blankets or similar items that will help keep riders calm. A limited number of sensory toys along with noise-reducing headphones and weighted lap blankets will also be available for guests to use thanks to a partnership with the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northeastern Ohio.

Tickets are $53 per rider and can be purchased by calling the Dennison Depot at 740-922-6776. Limited seating is available, so families are encouraged to order tickets in advance.
