Dennison, Ohio - The Dennison Fire Department is asking the community to help them provide food for local families this Christmas.

Dennison Fire Chief Dave McConnell says the station is collecting non-perishable food items and monetary donations from now until December 15th to help them fill boxes for local Share-A-Christmas families.

“Share-A-Christmas always gives us a hundred families, and in general it’s people from the Twin City area or just in the surrounding community, Tusky, Midvale, Gnaden area. For the most part, it’s everybody surrounding right here,” he says.

McConnell says people can support the effort by bringing unexpired canned and boxed foods to the Dennison Fire Station.

“A lot of people will drop off canned goods or instant potatoes or macaroni and cheese, et cetera Just anything nonperishable, people can drop off,” he says.

McConnell says they are also seeking monetary donations to purchase additional items for each of the boxes.

“We go to two of our local grocery stores and purchase a couple thousand dollars of food for those boxes as well from each store. We generally put about $5,000 worth of food in these boxes as well as everything else that we collect from the community,” he says.

Checks made payable to the Dennison Christmas Basket Fund can be dropped off at the station or mailed to 302 Grant St., Dennison, OH 44621.

McConnell says they’re hoping for enough donations to provide each family with a full Christmas dinner along with some additional food items and paper products.
