Dover, Ohio - Police are investigating the death of a New Philadelphia man seriously injured in an early-morning fight on Race Street last Friday.

At approximately 3:45 a.m. on October 12, the Dover Police Department received a call about a fight in 500 block of Race Street, according to Detective Jason Peters. Officers responded to the scene and located two men fighting in the street, one of whom was seriously injured.

“When our officers got there, they separated two men. One of them needed some obvious medical attention,” Detective Peters says.

Nicholas L. Winters, 38, was transported from the scene to Union Hospital and was later transferred to Aultman Hospital where he died later that evening.

The other party involved in the fight was a 43-year-old local man whose name has not been released. He was questioned at the scene of the incident and released.

The detective says the department is awaiting medical records and the results of an autopsy being conducted by the Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office. He says the office is conducting the autopsy because the Tuscarawas and Stark county cornors were not available at the time. A final report will be submitted to the Tuscarawas County Prosecutor’s Office to review for applicable charges.
