New Philadelphia, Ohio (WJER) - NewPointe Community Church wants to pack the former JCPenney store at New Towne Mall with volunteers who will return the favor by packing meals for hungry kids around the world.

NewPointe Missions Director Scott Compton says the church hopes to sign up 2,700 people to volunteer for the Feed My Starving Children event on Saturday, April 6th, at five locations, including the New Towne Mall. Compton says he saw firsthand how the project benefits children in need during a mission trip to Haiti last year.

“We saw young children in orphanages that come in literally close to death and then through the organization.. serving the children meals, they’re getting regular care now and regular feed, and the difference is just astronomical,” he says.

Volunteers can sign up for two-hour shifts where they will sort food and seal packages to be delivered around the world. Compton describes the event as high energy.

“It’s a great time family-friendly thing, a lot of music going, a lot of excitement. Tables will go around and will cheer as Feed My Starving Children updates us on where we’re at in terms of how many meals we’ve packed and how many more we have to meet our goal, so [it’s] a really upbeat, great time,” he says.

Anyone interested in helping out can sign up online at www.fortuscarawas.com.
