NEW PHILADELPHIA – Buckeye Career Center is applauding two former students and FFA members for achieving national honors.

Britney Wayts (Ag. & Diesel/Carrollton) and Ashley Smitley (Natural Resources/Indian Valley) were each recently awarded FFA American Degrees at the FFA National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. Wayts served as the 2017-18 BCC FFA chapter president while Smitley served as the 2017-18 chapter vice-president. 

The American Degree is awarded each year to less than one percent of FFA members, making it one of the organization’s highest honors. In addition to their degree certificate, recipients also receive a gold American FFA Degree key. 

Other BCC attendees to this year’s convention current chapter President Paul Hansel (Energy Operations/Garaway), Secretary Madyson Gill (Energy Operations/Tuscarawas Valley), Reporter Devan Landes (Ag. & Diesel/New Philadelphia), Sentinel Nolan Hagan (Ag. & Diesel/Indian Valley), Student Advisor Nate Dryden (Natural Resources/Indian Valley), and Historian Elizabeth Martin (Natural Resources/Claymont). Members Bryce Westfall (Energy Operations/Canton City), Erin Cline (Meat Cutting/Claymont), Autumn Walls (Welding/Sandy Valley), Amanda Galbraith (Commercial Truck/Claymont), and Dakota Walters (Ag. & Diesel/Ridgewood) also attended the event. The students were accompanied by Ag. & Diesel instructor Mr. Brad Pfeiffer and Intervention Specialist Mrs. Brenda Belknap.
