DOVER – The Alzheimer's Association officials are inviting area families and healthcare professionals to join them for a special celebration to kick off their 2019 awareness walk and fundraiser.

The association's Greater East Ohio Area Chapter will be hosting their Tuscarawas County Walk to End Alzheimer's Kickoff Party on Thursday, May 30th, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at  Hoodletown Brewing Co. at 424 W. 3rd St. in Dover. The event is intended to celebrate the achievements of past teams and provide guidance and support to first-time participants. Those who cannot attend are invited to register online at alz.org/walk.

The walk will take place on Saturday, September 21st, at Dover Middle School. Proceeds help the chapter to provide free care and support for local families.

Alzheimer's disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the U.S., and the only one of the top 10 leading causes of death that cannot be prevented, slowed down or treated. The association estimates that more than 2,500 individuals in Tuscarawas County are currently living with Alzheimer's or another form of dementia, with an average of 2-3 individuals serving as unpaid care as caregivers for each of those individuals.

The chapter offers a 24/7 Helpline that can be reached by calling 800-272-3900. They also facilitate a caregiver support group that meets on the third Tuesday of every month from 7 to 8 pm at Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital. For more information, visit alz.org/eastohio.
