Lakeville, Ohio (WTUZ) – A 12-year-old boy drowned Wednesday afternoon at Round Lake Christian Camp. The Ashland County Coroner identified the boy as Melvin Aborbie of Pickerington.

Investigator with the Ashland County Coroner’s Office Jennifer Taylor said a group of children were swimming in the lake located near SR 179.

“My understanding is that they were supposed to be taking a swimming test. A 12-year-old boy jumped in, did not resurface. The lifeguards jumped in and, unfortunately, they were unable to locate him.”

According to Ashland County Officials, the dive team recovered Aborbie’s body at 5:23 pm. Aborbie was pronounced dead at the scene.

Round Lake Christian Camp Manager Lance Powers posted a statement on the camp’s Facebook page.

“We regret to inform you that a drowning occurred at the camp, on the lodge side, this afternoon. We are cooperating with local authorities in the investigation. We appreciate your prayers for the family of the camper and for the camp. The staff and volunteers of Round Lake Christian Camp grieve for and with the family for their loss. The families of our other campers have being contacted and informed of the situation. We will keep the community updated as more information becomes available.”

Powers said Aborbie was participating in the water activities associated with a basketball camp. - Michele Spring Reporting
